Coffee outdoors, in the summer, with a breeze in the air, is just great theatre - even without a sound. I sometimes demand that I put the phone down in times like these and just pay more attention to my surroundings. Just let yourself live. As one of our employees put it, "People need to be normal again." Agreed.
Our team (minus me) is off visiting UCSB and Pepperdine this week. We enjoy getting to campuses in person not just to see the grounds, but to experience the neighborhood, to observe students, to take in that environment. Each college, in fact, is very unique (if you've visited more than 115 of them). Concluding our Zoom interviews with college admisisons staff this past week, an institution cancelled last minute - for the second time! As someone who studied Economics and Finance, I really wonder if universities understand they are selling something, in some cases at $80,000+ year, to everyone they come in contact with. Us included. We chose not to reschedule.
The Canyon is back in the desert now, unfortunately. With highs over 110 degrees, it might not see many rides for a while. The memories of the Canyon coasting down PCH 1 are unforgettable. I enjoy every minute of it. Pedaling up to a stoplight and having a quick 'hello' with other riders was one of the simple parts of the mornings that can pull you back from the stresses in life. Enjoy the pauses this week, enjoy your surroundings, put down your phone - just be normal.
